I'm not about to get all political in this post because God knows we've got enough of that going around on Facebook (good LORD). However, I would like to address one of the rather "trendy" topics to hit the viral internet world since the election and that is the topic of the millennial generation! Ohhhh yes! That's right, I'm going there. Why? Because while I am a millennial, and while I do agree with a LARGE portion of many of the recent articles regarding millennial's, I feel like a few things need to be addressed to highlight some of the strengths that have come from this group of people as well. Namely....
1. Millennial's have made a lot from a little
While Millenial's are often looked down upon for their lack of motivation or "work ethic," Millennial's have been able to make more money in a job working for themselves from a coffee shop than ever before. Call that lazy, unmotivated, or what have you; That's a pretty impressive advance for not only the technology world but for it's consumers as well.
2. Millennial's have made a way for creativity to stand out in the job market
For a long time the "arts" have been labeled many things but most definitely not a job title that established success or security in ones "climb up the corporate ladder." HOWEVER, now people are able to use their creative talents to establish their success in all facets of employment (i.e. website design, video editing, photography, typography, logo design, blogging, etc). With the help of technology, creativity has given way to success in many different shapes and sizes.
3. Millennial's have created a "new American dream"
No longer are people desiring to again "climb the corporate ladder," build a good pension plan, build a good solid family home and live off retirement when they turn 65. Nowaday's, people desire to work from home building their own schedule, with their own hours, using what money they do have to travel the world and explore different cultures. No longer are people desiring to work a steady 9-5 job, but one that is flexible, involves adventure, and creates lasting revenue and relationships.
4. Millennial's have made it more likely that one can live out that said "American Dream"
Because of #1 and #3, Millennial's have been able to execute that American Dream so much more quickly because technology has allowed them that privilege. Now people more than ever can conduct successful business at a Starbucks one minute, and jump on an airplane to Hong Kong the next.
5. Millennial's have reinforced that they have a voice and they want to be heard
However you want slice it, this generation has a voice. Whether that be a good thing or a bad thing, people aren't afraid to stand up for what they believe in and that's a great attribute to have. I, however, think that we Millennial's need to grow a pair and stop using social media to share that voice. But that's just me! :)
For as much as Millennial's are getting hated on right now, I am proud to be one. I was raised by such amazing parents who taught me some of life's greatest lessons and because of that I get to continue pushing past all the odds to live out my dreams fearlessly and courageously.
As always, thanks for stopping by!
